Boudoir Shoot Tips

A good boudoir shoot can be like chicken soup for your body image, and the photos might be the best gift you ever give your significant other… or yourself. Here are five suggestions for getting the most out of the experience.
1. Choose the right photographer. Do your homework and ask around. Sites like mywedding.com and thumbtack.com have listings for your area, and direct referrals from friends are a great way to find someone you’ll be comfortable with. Look for a photographer with a solid portfolio that you love every shot in, and who has excellent character references. Even the most technically skilled photographer won’t get great boudoir shots if you don’t feel safe and confident in their studio, so meeting for a consultation is essential. Make sure to ask about charges for sitting fees AND prints/digital files, as well as any extras like additional looks or specialty printing.
2. Choose the right makeup artist. All the same suggestions as for the photographer apply here, although a one-on-one consultation before the shoot probably isn’t necessary. Many boudoir photographers have makeup artists on staff or that they work with regularly, but they should not require you to use their services. If you must do it yourself, make sure your makeup is NON reflective and photo-ready.
3. Choose your wardrobe. Figure flattering corsets and lingerie are always favorites, as are body-skimming sheer negligees and mens boxers, shirts and ties. Also consider doing nude or nude-appearing shots with strategically places sheets, pillows, or other props. Above all else, though, choose items that make you feel beautiful and sexy, because how you feel is what’s going to come through in the photos.
4. Prep your body. Shave your underarms, legs, and bikini area (if you do that - hairy is hot too, if it’s deliberate.) Make a waxing appointment if that’s your thing. Make sure your dye job and manicure/pedicure are fresh (again, if that’s stuff you do - you want your photos to be especially beautiful, but authentically you.) Use a deep conditioning treatment on your hair and make sure you’re well moisturized all over. Any spray tanning should be done two to three days ahead of time. Get plenty of sleep and hydrate well in the couple days before your shoot - it makes a huge difference!
5. Come up with a cover story. If you’re surprising your significant other, you’ll need to figure out what to tell them about where you’re going and what you’re doing - especially if you live together. Besides the time that you’re gone, you’ll need an explanation for why you come home with your hair and makeup all fancied up, too. A makeover party with girlfriends is solid, especially if you can get a couple in on it to corroborate.
Most importantly, have fun! A happy gleam in your eye will make your photo a timeless treasure.
