Wedding Checklist: What to Have Prepared Before You Book a Makeup Artist

If you’re a bride-to-be, one of the things you probably need to do is start looking for a makeup and hair artist. If you’re beginning to put your feelers out and working on getting price quotes, there are a few things you need to have ahead of time before you start approaching artists about booking them.

Use this post as a checklist of items to have prepared when you’re hunting for the right hair and makeup artist for your big day. You won’t be able to get a correct price quote or reserve the date without the following info!

Photo references

You don’t need to know exactly what you want before you book, but having a few looks picked out with photo references will help you get a correct price quote. By knowing what you want, or at least having a few options in mind, will help your artist understand what you’re looking for and know what products and how much time will be needed for the big day. It’s good to figure out whether you’ll want false eyelashes, hair extensions, or airbrushed makeup before you approach an artist in order to get the right price quote.

Tattoo Cover Ups

If you don’t want a certain tattoo showing during the big day, make sure to tell your makeup artist. They will need to factor in the time and money it takes to cover it into your package. Also tell them where the tattoo is and how large it is; both of these details will effect the cover up process. Many makeup artists are highly skilled at tattoo cover up, they just need the heads up before the big day to prepare properly.

Wedding Date Details

You cannot book a hair or makeup artist unless you have your date and time set in stone. You can definitely inquire about rates and look at portfolios, but you will not be able to book until you have your date solid. MUAHs book up to a year-or sometimes more!-in advance, so the sooner you figure out the details of your big day, the better chance you have at booking the artist you want.

Wedding Party

It’s definitely helpful to know how many people in your wedding party will want their hair and makeup done. This helps the makeup artist better understand the scope of work they will need to do and if they may need to add artists to handle the entire group. It’s ok if you don’t know a solid number before booking, but at least let the artist know the number of bridesmaids you have and a rough number of how many people would like their makeup done. Don’t forget to ask your mother and mother-in-law if they would like their makeup done too!

Being prepared will help you minimize the stress of any part of the wedding planning process. Having the information above ironed out before you start approaching MUAHs will help make the entire process go smoothly for you and the artist.
