Photo Ready On A Budget?

One question I see asked from time to time is “What drugstore foundation is matte enough for a photo shoot?” The answer is that there isn’t one. Do not rely upon any brand of foundation sold at a drugstore for a photo shoot unless you have a high quality (not drugstore) name brand primer and a name brand mineral powder to cover it. Just because YOU think it makes you look matte does not mean that the camera won’t pick up reflectivity under the lights. You have no idea how much extra work this makes for the photographer, and you will never be asked back as a model if you don't either hire professional help or buy the right products. It has to be completely non-reflective, so you need products with no talc or sodium. As a professional makeup artist, I can tell you that you're NOT going to be able to buy it in any drugstore. No one product is going to do what you ask, and certainly not for under $10. Purchasing good makeup is an investment in your future, but if you are simply not in a position to pay $38 for foundation, I totally get that. Here is what I suggest: Go to Sephora, Ulta, and Beauty brands right before your shoot and ask for samples. They will usually give you enough for a couple of applications, so you can test once and still have enough for your shoot. Also, if you happen to be chummy with a pro-makeup artist, we usually get a 40% discount. If you find a product you like but can't pay retail, it’s worth asking a buddy for an assist. You'll still have to pay tax and shipping, but we can’t legally charge you additional. Making a habit of it might be kind of jerky, but it might be an option for one important shoot. Whatever you do, DO NOT use a cheap drugstore brand. You (and your photographer) will regret it.
